SENIOR CITIZEN OPENS WEB STORE
Houston, Texas, July 22, 2000
As a possible solution to the rising cost of health care and prescription medicines, as well as a need to build a
business to supplement future Social Security, 58-year-old Andrea Oden has opened her own e-commerce
website. She named it Serendipity Store, after the idea that "serendipity" means finding something
accidentally.
Setting up the site took six weeks of finding the right web host service, a usable shopping cart program and
figuring out how to use her limited ad budget. She is convinced that there are a large number of seniors her
age and older who are interested in finding new ways to tackle everyday health challenges associated with
and forestalling aging processes.
"I was furious when I realized that many natural supplements — and in particular, certain herbals — can be
utilized for simple health problems for less than the cost of a doctor's visit. I began treating myself for a
thyroid deficiency with an herb I read about, and felt better within a week." Books and reference materials
are widely available to describe any side effects or interaction problems to watch out for, she says. She is
animated when she discusses the anti-alternative medicine campaigns which she believes is financed by
medical doctors' organizations. She has formed an alliance with a nutritional scientist and gets expert
advice when she has questions.
"I can't afford health insurance premiums and began looking into what choices we have," she said, "and
realized that there are so many things we can do for ourselves. The Internet is a gold mine of information."
There are links on the website to the National Institute of Health and to other sites related in particular to
women's health. The site also offers free email services and a monthly newsletter.
Since the store opened last month, Oden says that most inquiries have related to weight loss. "Increase your
metabolism rate and you will begin to lose weight," she said. "Just stay away from ma huang and ephedra-
related products."
